This is a question that I get asked often. The easy answer is this…a life coach works with you on the present to create goals for the future.
In this article from the Huffington Post, “likens therapy and life coaching to step-siblings: sharing similar traits, but each using different approaches. Many life coaches focus on creating a new life path in order to achieve goals, whereas therapy sometimes looks into emotional resolutions to past problems in order to move forward, according to Counseling Today.”
Oftentimes therapists work with their clients to diagnose and resolve problematic behaviors, relationships, and trauma. They often work on past experiences in sessions whether from childhood or last month to work through emotions surrounding an experience so that the client can move forward to a happier future.
Life coaches work with clients with a goal in mind. We work with you on the “future you” and help you to use a map in order to reach the goal that you dream of. So whether that is starting your own business or starting a new career, losing weight, not for a goal number but because you want to feel better in your body. We don’t need to rehash old family relationships simply to talk about the fears you have around retirement. That isn’t to say that Life coaches won’t help you with family relationships but we don’t need to discuss your daddy issues in order to work with you on the present struggles, problems, or goals in your life.
We are multi-faceted people and I can’t help you with eating if we don’t talk about why you are overeating. So that might mean that we need to talk about your love life, are you overeating to numb your feelings about being single? Or we might need to look at your work situation, are you overeating because work is causing so much stress in your life and the food makes you feel better? When I work with clients I like to look at each individual as a house, each room representing a different area of your life. We move through the rooms of the house in various ways making sure to keep the focus of your goal at the forefront of our conversations.
I provide you with a road map, offering you advice and tools for you to explore the many ways in which you can reach your goal to make a lasting transformation.
